One warm summer evening when you were quite
young, a great wind wakened you from a deep sleep. You pulled on
grandfather’s big felt hat and ran outside to see what was happening.
Well, the wind was so mighty that it had shaken loose a whole patch of
stars from the sky. They came tumbling and sparkling down around you
like bits of glass. Quickly you held out the hat to catch some. The
stars were cool and bright and smelled like clover honey. And in each
falling star you saw your face reflected back, wondrously shining and
fair.

Every night after you were born, a large Bunny Rabbit appeared before
you and sang a sweet Bunny Rabbit song as you slept. One day Bunny said,
“Dearest child, now I too must rest. Come with me to Green Ice Mountain
and see where faithful Bunnies go to sleep.” Off you went, riding on
Bunny’s shoulders. At the mountain top Bunny and you sat and watched
crystals bigger than sugar cookies jingle down the slopes. Nearby was a
cave where one hundred thousand Bunny Rabbits lay fast asleep. At last
Bunny said, “Now, little friend, I must join the other Rabbits.
Just close your eyes and you’ll be home. And if you remember to sing the
Bunny Rabbit song every night while I’m gone, I will surely hear you and
someday I’ll return.” And that, of course, is exactly what happened.

You were quite young when one quiet day you were
dreaming of your birthday and a large bird tapped on your window. “Come
with me,” said the bird, “I know where to find your birthday!” This was
very confusing, but suddenly you and the bird were flying over rivers
and mountains, flying so fast that weeks and months slipped right by.
“Look, dear friend,” said the bird. “There’s your birthday!” Before you
was a rainbow and below it a million white butterflies dancing over a
meadow of blue flowers. “How beautiful it is here!”you cried, and you
and the bird sat on the meadow and ate chocolate cake and told each
other everything you ever knew, which was a great deal. And as you
soared back into the sky, the butterflies all called out, “Come again!
Come again!” And you knew that you would.
